Sustainable Healthcare SIG

The BASHH BHIVA Sustainable Healthcare SIG (Sus SIG) was launched at the BASHH conference in 2024 . The aim of the SIG is to drive awareness, action and share best practice in environmental sustainability across HIV and Sexual Health clinics across the UK and within our national organisations.
Members
We are a multidisciplinary group of motivated healthcare workers (including consultants, registrars, specialty doctors, nurses, pharmacists, Public Health staff and a community representative).

BHIVA/BASHH April 2026
We were delighted to host a session at BHIVA/BASHH 2026, chaired by SIG members Dr Amanda Clarke, and Jo Josh and entitled 'How do we climate proof HIV, Sexual and Reproductive Health? How patients and services are being affected globally and what are the mitigations?'
We welcomed the following speakers.
Professor Collins Iwuji from Africa Health Research Institute - 'Climate Proofing HIV Programmes in Hazard Prone Settings.'
Professor Carmen Logie from Universtiy of Toronto - 'Stormy with a chance of HIV: Exploring climate related extreme weather events and implications for HIV and sexual health prevention and care.'
BASHH June 2025
Dr Rachel Drayton, Dr Bridie Howe and Dr Ceri Evans presented a session on our document - 10 Steps to a Greener Sexual Health and HIV Clinic.
BHIVA April 2025
At this conference, SIG members Dr Amanda Clarke, Dr Ayoma Ratnappuli and Dr Thomas Pasvol launched our BHIVA/BASHH '10 Steps' document which can be found below.

BASHH Scientific Meeting October 2025
Assoc Professor of Sustainability at University College London and founder of GHASP (The Greener Healthcare & Sustainability Project), Dr Jonny Groome gave an engaging talk entitled 'Climate Health: fixing our Future' providing the latest information about Climate change, healthcare impacts and what we can do to play our part in clinics and our personal lives. This was followed by 3 clinical exemplars within our specialty - from implementing digital streamlined HIV PrEP care, switching to reusable tourniquets and patient/staff wellbeing with a lively Q & A session - great to see interest in environmental sustainability within our specialty!
GHASP Conference 2025 - Brighton
