Please save the date for the inaugural STIs and HIV in pregnancy: A training event for midwives.

This course will equip you with knowledge of the epidemiology, clinical presentations, diagnosis, complications, treatment, and acquisition risk reduction for STIs and HIV in pregnancy and the neonate. The course is tailored specifically to address the essential role of the midwife in managing STIs and HIV in pregnancy and is delivered by a panel of national experts. 

Topics covered will include:

  • Introduction to HIV and STIs in pregnancy: confidentiality, language, law, sexuality and gender identity
  • HIV in pregnancy
  • Hepatitis B and C in pregnancy
  • Herpes simplex virus in pregnancy
  • Syphilis in pregnancy
  • Other STIs in pregnancy (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, Mycoplasma genitalium, warts, molluscum)
  • Managing patients with STIs and HIV in pregnancy: priorities for a screening midwife and an obstetrician throughout and beyond pregnancy

Learning objectives:

  1. To understand the epidemiology of HIV and STIs in pregnancy in the UK.

  2. To recognise the clinical presentations of HIV and STIs in pregnancy and the neonate.

  3. To understand how to diagnose HIV and STIs in pregnancy, and when and how to refer for specialist input.

  4. To understand the potential impact and complications of HIV and STIs for the pregnant person, the fetus, and the neonate.

  5. To understand the treatment of HIV and STIs in pregnancy including the appropriate use of resources, and the importance of partner notification.

  6. To understand how to reduce the risk of acquisition of HIV and STIs in pregnancy.

  7. To reflect on the essential role of the midwife in managing HIV and STIs in pregnancy, as part of the wide clinical team including obstetrics, general practice, and genitourinary medicine.

  8. To be able to discuss HIV and STIs in pregnancy with patients in a sensitive and patient centred manner.
