BASSH marks the sad passing of Dr James Bingham

The British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) is greatly saddened to learn of the death of Dr James Bingham, an Honorary Life Fellow of the Association and a highly influential figure in the history of sexual health medicine in the UK.

Dr Bingham is widely recognised as one of the formative leaders of our modern specialty. His career helped to shape the landscape for modern, integrated sexual health services, underpinned by the guiding principles of expert, standards-driven care, available to all parts of society. He played a significant part in the evolution of BASHH, including through his instrumental role in the establishment of the Association of Genitourinary Medicine (AGUM), helping to professionalise the sector and securing wider recognition and support for sexual health services during a critical period.

Dr Bingham was also deeply committed to international collaboration. Through his longstanding involvement with IUSTI, including serving as its World President between 2001 to 2003, he contributed enormously to education, training, and professional exchange across the globe. He remained actively engaged with the Society well into later life.

Colleagues remember Dr Bingham as a dedicated physician, a thoughtful leader, and a generous mentor, whose knowledge of the specialty’s clinical, historical, and organisational foundations was exceptional.

On behalf of BASHH, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. We acknowledge with gratitude Dr James Bingham’s lasting contribution to sexual health and HIV medicine and the profession he served with such commitment.
