BASHH STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO COMMENTS BY THE HOME SECRETARY, SUELLA BRAVERMAN MP

British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) note with alarm the statements made by UK Home Secretary, Suella Braverman MP. In a recent speech, the Home Secretary stated “simply being gay, or a woman, or fearful of discrimination in your country of origin” is not a satisfactory reason to be provided with protection under international law. This view sets a deeply worrying precedent that risks validating hostility towards a vulnerable community attempting to acquire safety. The membership of BASHH work on a daily basis with the people directly impacted by this rhetoric. We understand how hurtful, upsetting and damaging such words are. We understand the physical and mental safety of the most vulnerable is at stake. BASHH will always support LGBTQ+ people, women and those in need in society irrespective of their circumstances. BASHH calls on all people to promote care and kindness and to use their voice to support others.
