This half-day course organised by the Genital Dermatology Special Interest Group of the British Association of Sexual Health & HIV (BASHH) covers basic topics in Genital Dermatology. The course is interactive, delivered by experts  and provides foundation theory and advice for clinicians who are relatively new to managing genital skin problems or wish to refresh their  knowledge.

Aim of the course - To equip participants with the basic knowledge and skills for the effective management of genital skin conditions


This course will be useful to all clinicians managing genital dermatology conditions:

Consultants, Specialty Trainees, SAS doctors, Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists working in Genitourinary Medicine/Sexual & Reproductive Health, General Practice,  Gynaecology  & Urology.

Doctors and nurses training in Dermatology may also find this course interesting and useful.

It is particularly aimed at clinicians who are relatively new to managing genital skin conditions or those who wish to refresh their knowledge.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Explain the pathophysiology of common genital skin diseases
  • Diagnose and manage common genital skin diseases e.g psoriasis, lichen sclerosus, eczema/dermatitis
  • Differentiate between common genital skin conditions and more challenging unusual cases
  • Recognise when it is appropriate to refer patients on to specialist services (Dermatology/Urology/Gynaecology/Colorectal) as per local pathways.

Course Delivery - The course will be delivered as interactive lectures with a case-based, practical focus. It will be delivered using Zoom Pro by experienced Consultant Dermatologists and Sexual Health Clinicians with a special interest in Genital Dermatology.

Speakers and session chairs

Dr Tang Shim

Dr Shim was appointed at University Hospital and Warwickshire NHS Trust in 2014. He is the lead consultant for contact dermatitis and genital dermatology. He was educated at the Queen’s University of Belfast.

He trained in general medicine in Belfast and dermatology in the West Midland. He had a Sir John Fisher Foundation Research Fellowship to study male genital skin disease at Chelsea and Westminster & University College Hospitals, London (2011 – 2013). His work led to award of MD (res) by Imperial College in 2017.

Dr Georgina Morris

I have worked as a Consultant in Sexual Health and HIV for 10  years (past 7 years in Salisbury) and treat both men and women with genital dermatological conditions, including sessions in a joint tertiary referral vulval skin clinic.

I am passionate about Medical Education and work as Foundation Programme Director in my Trust. As current Chair of the Genital Dermatology Special Interest Group I am working with colleagues to develop our courses and other training and education resources. Whilst we are sad not to be able to network with colleagues in person, providing our courses virtually presents an opportunity to expand their reach to a broader range of clinicians managing patients with skin problems.

Dr Randa Akel

Dr Akel is a Consultant Dermatologist working at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and at West Middlesex University Hospital and is part of the vulval service’s multidisciplinary team across both sites. Her clinical interests include paediatric dermatology, anogenital skin disease and Hidradenitis suppurativa. She is involved in dermatology research with focus on vulval dermatosis and novel skin therapies. Dr Akel also supports and facilitates the work of the Lady Garden Club, a patient led-support group for women with vulval conditions.

Dr Lisa Haddon

After completing GUM training I worked for 9 months in the Regional Dermatology Training Centre, Tanzania, teaching GUM to Dermatology Medical Officers. I worked as a GUM consultant in Cornwall RCHT for 20 years, specialising in genital dermatoses, genital pain and dyspareunia. In November 2019, I embarked on a new career in general dermatology having completed a 2 -year postgraduate Diploma in Practical Dermatology (Cardiff University). I continue to run a weekly genital skin clinic as well as general inflammatory and skin cancer clinics and am lead for University of Exeter Medical School placement in Dermatology.

Dr Komal Plaha

Komal is a consultant in HIV and Sexual Health at Sexual Health South West London where she also leads the vulval dermatology service. She trained at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital where she developed her interest in genital and HIV Dermatology completing a Diploma in Clinical Dermatology in 2017. She has been a member of the BASSH Specialist interest Group for 2 years.

Dr Imali Fernando

Imali Fernando is a GU Consultant and HIV service lead at the Chalmers Centre in Edinburgh and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. Her clinical interests include genital dermatology and she is a member of the BASHH Special Interest Group in Genital Dermatoses and was lead author of the BASHH guideline of the management of genital molluscum (2014). She participates in multi-specialty vulval dermatology clinics and in the past also undertook multi-specialty penile dermatology clinics (in combination with an urologist and now retired dermatologist). She is involved in medical education and is the GUM module lead for undergraduate medicine at UoE and Scottish TPD for GUM Specialty Training. She examines for the DipHIV and is a member of the BASHH BHIVA Mentoring Special Interest Group.

Dr Jill Pritchard

Consultant in GU Medicine/HIV for nearly 30 years at St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey. Developed interest in genital dermatology through working with Dr Sallie Neill, Consultant Dermatologist. For last 3 years since tendering led to local changes I work within the Gynaecology Dept. running clinics for ‘Genital Pain and Genital Dermatology’ seeing men and women with a variety of conditions.

Dr Sarah Schoeman

Sarah is a GUM consultant based in Leeds. She is Clinical Lead for the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust HIV service and the West Yorkshire HIV Network. In addition to HIV Sarah also has a specialist interest in genital dermatology and has recently joined the BASHH Genital Dermatology SIG. Sarah is also the GUM TPD for Yorkshire and Humber and is the national CCT and CESR Lead for the GUM SAC.

Dr Hannah Yeend-Curd Trimble

Dr Yeend-Curd-Trimble qualified from Imperial College School of Medicine in 2011. She is currently a specialist registrar (ST6) in Genito-Urinary medicine based at the Mortimer Market Centre in London and was appointed as BASHH Genital Dermatology Specialist Interest Group trainee representative in June 2020. She hopes to continue to develop her career in GU medicine with a specialist interest in genital dermatology and general dermatology as she moves into a consultant role at the end of her registrar training. 

Dr Ben Goorney

Dr Ben Goorney is a Consultant in Sexual Health/HIV Physician for Salford, provided by Bolton Foundation Trust. Having trained in the specialty at Charing Cross Hospital London and Leeds  I  have over 30 years’ experience as Consultant in Sexually Transmitted Infections/HIV Infection. My specialist interests are viral Sexually Transmitted Infections, HIV and Genital Dermatoses and provide a monthly joint multidisciplinary genital dermatology clinic.                                          

Paula Chaplin

Clinical Nurse Specialist at St Peters Hospital in Chertsey working in Gynaecology outpatients seeing patients ref to me re genital pain. My interest in genital dermatology started while working alongside Dr Pritchard for over 20 years. I am a BASHH member and have just recently joined the BASHH special interest group for Genital Dermatology as a nurse representative. 

At present I am studying towards a qualification in psychosexual therapy.
