Clinical Effectiveness Group page

Background

The Clinical Effectiveness Group (CEG) was established jointly by the Medical Society for the Study of Venereal Diseases (MSSVD) and the Association for Genitourinary Medicine (AGUM) in October 1997.

The group is made up as follows: five members nominated by BASHH, one person nominated by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) Joint Specialty Committee in GU Medicine; the Chair of the BASHH National Audit Group (NAG) and one member nominated by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP).

  • Dr Keith Radcliffe (Chair) (BASHH)
  • Dr David Daniels (BASHH NAG)
  • Dr Mark FitzGerald (BASHH)
  • Dr Margaret Kingston (BASHH)
  • Dr Neil Lazaro (RCGP)
  • Dr Gill McCarthy (BASHH)
  • Dr Ann Sullivan (BASHH)

The remit of the group is to produce and update evidence-based National Guidelines and standards for UK specialists in genitourinary medicine. The first 24 such guidelines were published in the supplement to the August 1999 edition of the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections. these guidelines were updated in 2002 and the revised versions initially published on the AGUM and MSSVD websites, and now on the BASHH website. Archived BASHH guidelines are available on the BASHH website.

The Group continues to develop new guidelines and to update existing guidelines on a rolling basis. It also liaises with the NAG in promoting national audit in GU medicine.

The CEG commissions individuals or special interest groups to write the guidelines according to CEG specifications based on the Appraisal of Guideline Research and Evaluation (AGREE) instrument developed by the Royal College of Physicians (www.agreecollaboration.org) . All CEG guidelines are reviewed after a maximum of 5 years; each year they are all re-read and an earlier review considered when there have been significant developments. Each guideline being developed or revised has an allocated member of CEG to support the process and ensure consistency of methodology, content and style ; when the guideline is ready for wider review it is posted on the BASHH website for three months and comments requested. The CEG has ultimate editorial responsibility for the guidelines.

For advice to authors on guideline development, see : CEG GUIDELINES FRAMEWORK (June 2010)

The CEG is also involved in producing standards for UK specialists, both for the performance of their services and also to assess the performance of individual specialists.

BASHH continues to finance the Group on a rolling annual basis.

The CEG serves as an advisory and co-ordinating body for guidance relating to GU Medicine practice produced by various external organisations, eg the British National Formulary, Clinical Knowledge Summaries (which produces software to guide general practitioners in clinical decision making), the fpa, the Health Protection Agency and the National electronic Library for Health (NeLH).

Members of the Group also sit on the Royal College of Physicians' Clinical Effectiveness Forum, the Royal College of General Practitioners, the NICE Collaborating Centre for Womens & Childrens Health (hosted by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London), and on the British HIV Association's Audit Group.

The CEG would welcome at any time, comments on its output or suggestions for future work. If you wish to discuss a particular aspect of the guidelines with colleagues, please contact the CEG Chair: e mail keith.w.radcliffe@hobtpct.nhs.uk

Guideline Development
  1. As it is the Clinical Effectiveness Group (CEG) that has been sanctioned to produce (by a standard process involving evidence base and consultation ) official national BASHH guidelines, any other guidance written by BASHH members should have the involvement of the CEG if these are to be deemed official national BASHH guidelines. If necessary please contact the CEG Chair, Dr Keith Radcliffe, for further information.
  2. All authors with a significant contribution to the guideline will be recognised in the publication.
  3. The CEG seeks constantly to draw on a wide group of individuals to produce it's guidelines, and so the original author(s) may not always be involved in the production of revised guidelines.
