Qualified in 1984 from the University of Sheffield Medical School and conducted his postgraduate studies in Sheffield and London. He was appointed to his current post of Consultant Genito-Urinary Physician and Senior Lecturer at the Southampton University Hospitals in 1993.
His major interests are teaching, education, and research into the management of genital herpes. He has published widely in these areas. He is a past convenor of the Board of examiners for the Diploma in GUM (Lon) and in 2002 founded the Diploma in HIV Medicine. He is Chair of the SAC in GUM at the Royal College of Physicians.
