Cathy Harman - Memorial Prize for multidisciplinary team innovation.
Many of you will remember Cathy Harman, who led the DH/MedFASH national review of GU medicine services. Sadly, Cathy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer during the summer of 2007, and she died in March 2009.
Cathy trained as a nurse at Westminster Hospital in the early 1980s and began a nursing path which was to be dedicated to HIV and to sexual health. Some of the many stories she told from those early years indicated a commitment and passion for improving care and educating other practitioners that she was to pursue throughout her career.
Her career in nursing progressed and in the mid 1990s she took on the role of Lead nurse for GUM/HIV and then GUM Service Manager for Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals. She was central to some early planning and initiation of service innovation and modernisation initiatives for sexual health in South East London which went on to achieve considerable success.
Following a senior hospital management post, heading up a Specialist Medicine Directorate, she missed her direct involvement in sexual health and her reputation in this area led her to a major role leading the national MedFASH review of GU medicine services, commissioned by DH. She has certainly made a significant contribution to improved access and service redesign, and to the role of nurses within the skill mix of the modern GUM service.
As a tribute to Cathy Harman's dedication to improving sexual health care, BASHH has introduced a prize in her memory. This is a team award for innovation and service modernisation awarded to a multidisciplinary team.
