2nd Joint Meeting
British Association for Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH)
American Sexually Transmitted Diseases Association (ASTDA)
19-21 May 2004, Bath
This was the second joint meeting with our American colleagues. It was held in the historic city of Bath in the elegant Assembly Rooms. Kate Horn, the local organiser, did a brilliant job and the whole thing went very smoothly. She was helped by Peter Greenhouse, from Bristol , who organised the A/V facilities.
A record 480 delegates attended the meeting. The scientific content was of a very high standard, with plenary speakers from both sides of the Atlantic . They included George Kinghorn who gave the inaugural Robert Steel Morton lecture. There were 29 oral presentations and 155 posters. The abstracts of these are published as a supplement of the International Journal of STD & AIDS.
There were joint winners of the David Oriel prize for the best oral presentation: Susan Hopkins with Macrolide resistant Treponema pallidum as the cause of a syphilis epidemic in men who have sex with men, and Arnold Fernandes with Cervicitis and ectropion, but not bacterial vaginosis are associated with an increased chlamydial load in the vagina.
The poster prize was awarded to Julie Giles for Taqman assay for determination of quinolone resistant N gonorrhoeae using applied biosystems 7900 sequence detection system.
The HIV prize went to Rebecca Baggaley for Influence of timing of antiretroviral treatment initiation on HIV epidemics - insights from mathematical models.
The Maggie Godley memorial prize was awarded to Pat Munday for A randomised control trial of nurse versus doctor screening of asymptomatic male and female patients.
The drinks reception was held in The Roman Baths. The evening was very warm but no bathing was allowed! The gala dinner was in The Assembly Rooms with the added benefit of a wonderful firework display to mark the start of the Bath music festival.
