BASHH Library
Dr Michael Waugh, Hon. Librarian Many of the members of BASHH probably know little of the Society’s Library. This is
a short guide to the collection. History
It is based on a collection started about 30 years ago from the estate of Dr AH Harkness (1889-1970) celebrated for his monograph on non-gonococcal urethritis. It has been built up since by other gifts and bequests. For many years it was housed at the London Hospital.
My predecessor as librarian was the late Dr JD Oriel who was wise enough to purchase many historical books for MSSVD from Dr RS Morton. Dr Oriel also catalogued the books.
After the death of Dr Morton further books were purchased from his estate. Royal Society of Medicine Library
This is one of the great medical libraries of the World. I was the honorary librarian to it from 1995 to 1999. To celebrate the bicentenary of RSM the library has been modernised . BASHH Library
The BASHH library is cared for by the professional staff of the RSM library (Director Mr I Snowley). Robert Greenwood is the librarian who looks after our library.
He is an expert on historical medical books. The collection is housed in a secure room as there are many valuable volumes in it. The collection contains books of venereological interest going back to the sixteenth century. It is rich in items from about 1750 to 1980. There is a budget for additions and upkeep. Books may not be removed from RSM library. All may be read as reference material. Advice on researching
