History
and Background
The BASHH Clinical Governance Committee (CGC) was
established in November 2003. The Committee retains some of the
characteristics of the Association for Genitourinary Medicine structure,
namely regional representation. The regional representation of the
Committee means that experience or practice can be shared from areas
around the country, and this knowledge can be pooled for the benefit
of all.
The CGC is responsible for setting and monitoring standards of clinical
services for Sexual Health, including HIV services, through a framework
of clinical governance, peer review, nationally co-ordinated clinical
audit and sharing of best practice.
Remit
The CGC is advisory and supportive and aims to stimulate
action and advice in a co-ordinated fashion to promote and facilitate
services in connection with sexually transmitted infections.
The CGC will focus on a wide range of current and topical issues
in Sexual health and HIV concerning:
- Implementation of strategies and policies
of BASHH as approved by the Governing Board
- Developing and managing services
- Setting and monitoring standards and specifications,
updating in responding to best practice as necessary.
- Identifying areas of best clinical practice
within individual clinics or regions, promoting them for adoption
where appropriate whilst recognising local differences.
- Identifying regional and individual clinic
difficulties.
- Exploring solutions to issues through
discussion and shared experiences at committee level allowing
action plans to be suggested.
- Co-ordinating a peer review system, on
a local basis within each region, as required or in response to
a member’s request.

Working Relations
The Chairperson of the CGC will be a member of the
Governing Board of BASHH and the CGC will report to the Governing
Board.
The CGC will link with other organs of BASHH,
third party organisations and individuals where indicated. It may
also forge relationships with local hospital and primary care Trusts,
through the Branch Chairperson, in response to individual clinic
requests.

'Guidance on Engagement of BASHH with Commissioners & other Bodies Involved in NHS Tendering'
The BASHH Board wish to issue guidance regarding the involvement of BASHH in the process of tendering GUM and sexual health services. In producing this guidance, the Board of BASHH wish to emphasise the following priorities.
As part of its charitable aims, BASHH seeks to uphold the standards for the delivery of clinical services. It does not have a view on the different merits of services which are provided for the NHS by Foundation Trusts, Acute Trusts, PCTs, the voluntary or private sectors. There are BASHH Fellows and Members working in all such organisations.
Where commissioners decide to tender NHS services, BASHH may be approached for confidential advice and guidance on the professional standards, clinical governance and other aspects of the services being tendered. In giving such advice, BASHH will strive to ensure that the standards of open access, confidentiality, clinical governance, diagnostic tests and management protocols are upheld to the highest professional standards.
