The remit of the group is to produce and update evidence-based National Guidelines and standards for UK specialists in genitourinary medicine. The first 24 such guidelines were published in the supplement to the August 1999 edition of the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections. these guidelines were updated in 2002 and the revised versions initially published on the AGUM and MSSVD websites, and now on the BASHH website. The Group continues to develop new guidelines and to update existing guidelines on a rolling basis. It also liaises with the NAG in promoting national audit in GU medicine. The remit of CEG is to produce and update evidence-based National Guidelines on sexually transmissible infections and related conditions for BASHH , and to liaise with the NAG about promoting national audit in GU Medicine . The first 24 national guidelines were published in the supplement to the August 1999 edition of the Journal Sexually Transmitted Infections ; updated versions were initially published on the AGUM and MSSVD websites, and now on the BASHH website. The CEG commissions individuals or special interest groups to write the guidelines according to CEG specifications based on the Appraisal of Guideline Research and Evaluation (AGREE) instrument developed by the Royal College of Physicians (www.agreecollaboration.org) . All CEG guidelines are reviewed after a maximum of 5 years; each year they are all re-read and an earlier review considered when there have been significant developments. Each guideline being developed or revised has an allocated member of CEG to support the process and ensure consistency of methodology, content and style ; when the guideline is ready for wider review it is posted on the BASHH website for three months and comments requested. The CEG has ultimate editorial responsibility for the guidelines. (Also see Guidelines Specifications Document) The CEG is also involved in producing standards for UK specialists, both for the performance of their services and also to assess the performance of individual specialists. BASHH continues to finance the Group on a rolling annual basis. The CEG serves as an advisory and co-ordinating body for guidance relating to GU Medicine practice produced by various external organisations, eg the British National Formulary, the PRODIGY Project (which produces software to guide general practitioners in clinical decision making), the Health Protection Agency and the National electronic Library for Health (NeLH). Members of the Group also sit on the Royal College of Physicians' Clinical Effectiveness Forum, on the NICE Collaborating Centre for Womens & Childrens Health (hosted by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London), and on the British HIV Association's Audit Group. The CEG would welcome at any time, comments on its output or suggestions for future work. If you wish to discuss a particular aspect of the guidelines with colleagues, please contact the CEG Chair: e mail keith.w.radcliffe@hobtpct.nhs.uk. Guideline Development
